The screenplay makes reference to a mysterious book, a treatise by the writer Anonymous: "SUNSET BOULEVARD CTCs: CHANGE YOUR FATE IN LOS ANGELES"

In this book, among drawings ascribed to a "virtual clone" of Chagall, there
is a detailed description of the CTCs, the Closed Timelike Curves, present over many Los Angeles
earthquake faults.
CTCs, as you can read in Bruno Loeb's "LABYRINTH" book, will allow us to
jump from one universe to another, a natural phenomenon due to space-time
distortion, that will change your fate in the best or in the worst.
